Historic Sites

The Alamo
*Located across the street
The Alamo is the symbol of Texas independence. A small band of Texians held off the much larger army of Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna here for 13 days, before being defeated and killed on March 6, 1836. News of their deaths inspired Texian soldiers under the leadership of Sam Houston to defeat Santa Anna and win independence a little more than a month later, April 21, 1836, at San Jacinto.

The Mission Trail

More than 100 years before Texas won its independence, the region consisted of a trail of Franciscan and Spanish missions along the San Antonio River, from which small communities sprung. Today you can tour four of missions founded between 1720 and 1731.

River Walk
*Access is across the street; River Walk extends through downtown San Antonio
Mention San Antonio and every Texan has a memory of the River Walk. It is the top visitor attraction in Texas. Take the river cruise to orient yourself to all of the shops, restaurants, bistros and excitement you can experience on foot later.

El Mercado/Market Square

"El Mercado" (The Market) is an area of 32 shops resembling an authentic Mexican mercado, with 80 specialty shops in Farmers Market Plaza. Many local events are held here, too, so check the schedule to see what’s happening during your visit. Open 10am-8pm, summer; 10am-6pm, winter. Stores closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day and Easter.

The Museo Alameda

Telling the story of the Latinio experience in America, this museum is affiliated with the Smithsonian Institute. Open Tuesday through Saturday 10am-6pm (8pm on Wednesday) and Sunday 12pm-6pm. Closed Monday. Admission fee.

Open-Air San Antonio Trolley

A "hop on, hop off" service that helps you get around to all of the points of interest in the heart of the city, the trolley boards within a block of the Crockett. They also offer a formal trolley tour to help acquaint you with the area before setting out on your own.

Wax Museum and Ripley's Believe It Or Not!
*1 block away on Alamo Plaza
Discover over 500 exhibits of oddities, curiosities, and illusions gathered from around the world by Robert Ripley. This is one of the largest of its kind in the world, and fun for all ages. Open daily.

San Antonio Children's Museum

This remarkable museum calls itself the place where children play to learn and adults learn to play. It features exhibits on flight, health, physics and so much more.

Hemisfair/Tower of the Americas
*5 blocks away, just south of the Convention Center
Enjoy a panoramic view of San Antonio and the surrounding Hill Country from the 750-foot Tower of the Americas. The icon and theme structure for HemisFair in 1968, the tower features a glass-walled elevator that takes you over 500 feet to the restaurant and observation level.

McNay Art Museum

Works by Renoir, Gauguin, Van Gogh, and Georgia O'Keeffe are among the treasures you will see here, in the first museum of modern art in Texas.

San Antonio Museum of Art

Housed in a former brewery on the banks of the San Antonio River, the museum’s collections span 5,000 years of human inspiration and creativity.

King William Historic District

Known throughout the country for its restoration of San Antonio's original upscale neighborhood, the King William Historic District is an area where you will enjoy art galleries, restaurants and a thriving commercial corridor known as South Town.

Witte Museum

This museum focuses on science, natural history and culture, and includes exhibit like the HEB Science Treehouse. It is set in San Antonio’s beautiful Brackenridge Park.

San Antonio Zoo

The 56-acre zoo in Brackenridge Park houses and cares for more than 3,500 animals, representing over 750 different species.

Brackenridge Park

In addition to the Zoo and Witte Museum, the park also includes Brackenridge Golf Course, an A.W. Tillinghast 1916 design,  and the two-mile miniature zoo train. There are hiking, jogging and cycling paths, as well as picnic spots and outdoor recreation.

Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center

San Antonio’s convention center has been expanded recently to 1.3 million square feet, offering over 440,000 gross square feet of exhibit space.

Alamodome

Adjacent to the Convention Center, the Alamodome is a venue for events of national significance, like the NCAA Final Four and major football bowl games. It is also an active entertainment facility, so check the schedule when you are in town, to find out who is playing.

Majestic Theater

A vintage Vaudeville theater, the Majestic is a Texas and and National Historic Landmark. It has been renovated for the performing arts, and now hosts the San Antonio Symphony and the AT&T Broadway Series

Aztec Theater

This 1926 building is known as the last surviving exotic-themed movie palace in Texas. It is an architectural treasure built during the days when movies were shown in grand palace-like theaters, and it has been restored to host special performing arts events throughout the year.

Retama Park
